Conscious Travel 101

Bags packed, you board your flight and head to your latest adventure. You’re thinking of all your upcoming trip plans and eagerly await arrival to your destination. You did the thing! It took courage to venture out of your comfort zone and embrace a new experience.

I decided to actively prioritize travel in my life for the last several years. It has been incredibly rewarding and has been a contributor to the growth I have experienced. The number one question family and friends ask me is “how are you not intimidated to go where you are going” and “do what you’re doing” whether that be solo or a small group trip. I think it really comes down to intention and knowing how much growth is on the other side of our comfort zones. I’ve learned a lot in my travels and compiled my best tips and thoughts on how to be a more intentional traveler, find your flow while experiencing a new place and get the most of it.

The Journey Ahead:

Many people describe feeling like the “best version” of themselves while travelling. It’s likely that this is largely attributed to the positive attitude and openness many possess towards getting to experience something new and exciting. Some go as far to look at travel as a means to escaping their everyday lives. When we practice mindfulness in the here and now, we realize we don’t actually need to escape life. We become aware of life’s highs and lows, learn how to flow through them and find gratitude in the day to day.  When we look at travel through a mindful lens we learn to look at it as an opportunity for further growth. Travelling allows us to exercise courage, gain new perspectives, and to appreciate and respect other ways of life, cultures and new experiences.

Conscious Travel Practices

When travelling, the more intentional we are, the more beautiful the experience is capable of becoming. On your next trip, consider implementing these conscious travel practices:

  1. Slow down and try your best to unplug. This will give you a chance to connect with yourself, who you are travelling with and new people you meet abroad along the way.
  2. Support local whenever possible to give back to the place you are visiting (restaurants, shops, accommodation, guides). This small act of kindness has a ripple effect that can make a huge difference in the lives of others.
  3. Respect the culture and environment of the destination you are visiting. When we respect others, we practice loving awareness.
  4. Only take what you need and avoid overpacking. You truly do not need as much as you think. Material items not only burden us physically while travelling but also can create mental clutter.
  5. Move and nourish yourself in mindful way. Make healthy choices that make you feel good and honour your body.
  6. Try to stay on track with your routine as best as possible. Of course, you’ll have to make adjustments but stick with the important habits you’ve worked hard to build. Examples: taking vitamins, workout, practicing meditation, reading.
  7. Document your journey, thoughts and overall experience. Undoubtedly, travel will introduce you to something new. Journal and photograph when it is mindful and respectful to do so. Oftentimes when we travel, the floodgates of inspiration open up.
  8. Have a plan but leave room for spontaneity and go with the flow when you can. It’s a great idea to sort accommodations, transportation and even look into activities before arriving to your travel destination. However, there’s something amazing about allowing room to discover something unexpected and unplanned.

When we travel intentionally, we are able to open ourselves up to more joy and growth than we thought possible. When we are conscious in the way we love through travel, we positively effect our experience and the experiences of others around us.  If you’ve been thinking about taking a trip in the near future, we hope you have meaningful and safe travels. Good luck and don’t forget to soak in every moment of it.
